Mac Keyboard Hack Demonstrated at Black Hat Conference
Monday August 3, 2009
At a recent Black Hat security conference, K. Chen, a Mac user from the Georgia Institute of Technology, demonstrated a method for hacking and embedding code within an aluminum Apple keyboard. Mr. Chen’s example code just turned the caps lock LED on and off, but he explained how the same method could be used to embed a keystroke logger or to totally disable a Mac’s keyboard.
Mr. Chen’s method involved hacking the Apple keyboard updater that was used to correct an early problem with the aluminum keyboards. The changes he made to the code allowed him to successfully inject new code for the keyboard’s processor to run whenever the keyboard was powered up. Besides turning the LED on and off, he also modified the keyboard so the ‘W’ key no longer functioned as expected.
Although Mr. Chen’s changes were benign and served only as a demonstration, he made it clear that a malicious individual could use the same technique to either damage a Mac’s aluminum keyboard (including keyboards on recent MacBook Pros) or introduce code that could be used to gain control of a target Mac via the modified keyboard. This was especially chilling because even erasing and reinstalling OSX would not exorcise the evil code from the keyboard.
Mr. Chen has been in contact with Apple about the security implications, and it is expected that Apple will release a firmware update to lock the keyboard and prevent any changes.
